Tetravalent Group 14 Derivatives of a Bulky Aminocarbazole

    Get PDF
Stepwise metalation and metathesis reactions with a bulky aminocarbazole were conducted to prepare derivatives of tetravalent group 14 elements. These were regarded as putatively suitable precursors for the formation of doubly bonded group 14/group 15 molecules such as imino species. Starting from an N-aminocarbazole, deprotonation with benzyl potassium formed the corresponding solvent-free dimeric amide. Metathesis reactions with EBr4 (E=Si, Ge, Sn) afforded RN(H)EBr3. Deprotonation of RN(SiMe3)H with benzyl potassium afforded the solvent-free monomeric amide RN(SiMe3)K which was then treated with SiCl4, GeBr4 and SnI4. Both obtained series of compounds, RN(H)EBr3 and RN(SiMe3)EX3, were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and SCXRD studies

A practical theological study of multicultural youth work in Pretoria, South Africa

    Get PDF
Multicultural youth ministry is increasingly becoming an important reality concerning ministering to adolescents within a Christian community. A holistic focus was used to analyse the practices concerning ministering to diverse adolescents within a local youth ministry context. The study was exploratory in nature and made use of a qualitative case study approach using semi-structured interviews and focus group interviews via Skype. The data was analysed within a descriptive-interpretive framework using content analysis. Findings mainly related to five themes that emerged during the research, namely: multicultural understanding, purposeful program, relationship centeredness, transforming spirituality, and the youth leader’s realm. The data also reflected underlining contextual ministry realities namely, authenticity, inclusiveness, intentionality and limited diversity. This research provides meaningful insight within the practical theological realm as the current South African literature regarding multicultural youth ministry is limited. Similarly, this study is focused on the theological conversation within a culturally diverse youth ministry context.Philosophy, Practical and Systematic TheologyM. Th. (Practical Theology

Miocene orographic uplift forces rapid hydrological change in the southern central Andes

    Get PDF
Rainfall in the central Andes associated with the South American Monsoon and the South American Low-Level Jet results from orographic effects on atmospheric circulation exerted by the Andean Plateau and the Eastern Cordillera. However, despite its importance for South American climate, no reliable records exist that allow decoding the evolution of thresholds and interactions between Andean topography and atmospheric circulation, especially regarding the onset of humid conditions in the inherently dry southern central Andes. Here, we employ multi-proxy isotope data of lipid biomarkers, pedogenic carbonates and volcanic glass from the Eastern Cordillera of NW Argentina and present the first long-term evapotranspiration record. We find that regional eco-hydrology and vegetation changes are associated with initiation of moisture transport via the South American Low-Level Jet at 7.6 Ma, and subsequent lateral growth of the orogen at 6.5 Ma. Our results highlight that topographically induced changes in atmospheric circulation patterns, not global climate change, were responsible for late Miocene environmental change in this part of the southern hemisphere. This suggests that mountain building over time fundamentally controlled habitat evolution along the central Andes.Fil: Rohrmann, Alexander. Universitat Potsdam; AlemaniaFil: Sachse, Dirk. Polymer microarrays rapidly identify competitive adsorbents of virus-like particles (VLPs)

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 highlights the global need for platform technologies to enable rapid development of diagnostics, vaccines, treatments, and personal protective equipment (PPE). However, many current technologies require the detailed mechanistic knowledge of specific material-virion interactions before they can be employed, for example to aid in the purification of vaccine components, or in design of more effective PPE. Here we show that an adaption of polymer micro array method for screening bacterial-surface interactions allows for screening of polymers for desirable material-viron interactions. Non-pathogenic virus like particles including fluorophores are exposed to the arrays in aqueous buffer as a simple model of virons carried to the surface in saliva/sputum. Competitive binding of Lassa and Rubella particles is measured to probe the relative binding properties of a selection of copolymers. This provides the first step in the development of a method for discovery of novel materials with promise for viral binding, with the next being development of this method to assess absolute viral adsorption and assessment of the attenuation of the activity of live virus which we propose would be part of a material scale up step carried out in biological laboratory safety level 4 facilities and the use of more complex media to represent biological fluids

Nonlinear Waves in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Physical Relevance and Mathematical Techniques

    Get PDF
The aim of the present review is to introduce the reader to some of the physical notions and of the mathematical methods that are relevant to the study of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). Upon introducing the general framework, we discuss the prototypical models that are relevant to this setting for different dimensions and different potentials confining the atoms. We analyze some of the model properties and explore their typical wave solutions (plane wave solutions, bright, dark, gap solitons, as well as vortices). We then offer a collection of mathematical methods that can be used to understand the existence, stability and dynamics of nonlinear waves in such BECs, either directly or starting from different types of limits (e.g., the linear or the nonlinear limit, or the discrete limit of the corresponding equation). Finally, we consider some special topics involving more recent developments, and experimental setups in which there is still considerable need for developing mathematical as well as computational tools.Comment: 69 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Nonlinearity, 2008.
